As the use of high-voltage power transmission by electrosurgery increased, the demand for insulators with higher voltage capability grew. The first practical high-voltage insulator was invented by Carl Von Linde in 1912. He designed and patented a new vacuum-type insulator consisting of two long steel tubes separated by a dielectric and filled with an insulating gas and a ceramic powder, for use with high-voltage transmission lines in the coal industry [156]. The vacuum tube is known today as the Vacuum Insulator (Figure 2.2) [157]. The vacuum insulator is made from a combination of two vacuum chambers, or tubes, a dielectric, and ceramic powder. The vacuum chambers are filled with an insulating gas and ceramic powder. The two tubes are connected at the top end and another tube is attached at the bottom end. This configuration creates a chamber that is approximately 10 cm deep and 25 cm wide. If the space within the two tubes is kept from collapsing by a vacuum, the ceramic powder and gas create a separation between the two tubes allowing an electric current to be transmitted through the insulator. The vacuum insulator is effective at transmitting electricity at voltages between 29,000 and 60,000 volts DC. The vacuum insulator is made from a combination of two vacuum chambers, a dielectric, and ceramic powder. In addition to the vacuum insulator, the vacuum process can also be used to make other kinds of insulators such as vacuum variable-impedance insulators. Vacuum variable-impedance insulators are used to prevent voltage surges on transmission lines. Vacuum variable-impedance insulators allow the vacuum pressure to adjust to the power line voltage, providing enhanced protection. The vacuum variable-impedance insulator is made up of two vacuum chambers, which can be designed to have variable resistances, a dielectric, and a ceramic powder [158].
High-voltage power lines usually use two classes of insulator: the first called 'dielectric' insulators and the other called 'ground' insulators. Dielectric insulators are used where the power is to be transmitted in the form of electricity and other insulators are used where the power is transmitted as electromagnetic energy. Dielectric insulators are generally larger than ground insulators and have a greater safety factor. Ground insulators are generally used for medium and low power transmission such as local distribution.
