Who should take this course Though there are technically no prerequisites, this intermediate-level class rewards English language learners with some English familiarity. Anyone who speaks some English but would like to improve their fluency would benefit.

English for the Energy Industries is a foundation English course for employees in the oil, gas and petrochemicals industries. It is aimed at pre- and low-intermediate level students who have a basic grasp of English, but who need to use technical and semi-technical vocabulary within specific functional language applicable to the workplace. It provides approximately 140 hours of listening, speaking, reading, writing and language practice activities.
All students completing a Bachelor of Arts degree are required to attain proficiency in a foreign language. Proficiency may be satisfied by completing a language class at the 103 (intermediate) level or three years of any one foreign language in high school. Students may also meet this requirement through AP or CLEP testing.
TESOL Track Candidates. TESOL track candidates must provide evidence of intermediate-level proficiency in a language other than English. The language proficiency requirement may be met through one of the following options: (a) completion of 12 hours of undergraduate coursework in a foreign language with at least a C average; (b) completion of the second intermediate foreign language college course with a grade of C or higher; or (c) passing a reading competency test equivalent to the level of the second intermediate foreign language college course administered by the Department of World Languages and Cultures. A TESOL track candidate whose native language is not English will be considered to have met the language requirement.

Students should enroll at the point in the sequence of courses for which their previous study and/or experience has prepared them. Students with no language background should enroll in fundamental 101-level courses. Normally, two years of high school language study are considered to be equivalent to one year of college language.
