On November 29, 2010, Stump put up on his website two different versions of his debut song, "Spotlight", one called "Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia)", and the other "Spotlight (New Regrets)", with download links for both. Stump expressed that after months he still could not decide which version he liked better and asked his fans to vote on a poll for the version of the single they liked better and wanted to have on the album. The polls closed leaning toward "Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia)", however Stump has since decided to include "Spotlight (New Regrets)" on Soul Punk and put "Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia)" on his debut EP, Truant Wave, claiming that the votes were too close and that he felt as if "Oh Nostalgia basically needed its own record", building Truant Wave around it.
I think he succeeded.Structurally, the songs are fairly simple. The time signatures stay almost exclusively in 4/4, and the song format is very close to the standard pop verse/chorus/break standard. But Hopper's bass, very similar to Percy Jones' style, with a lot of mandolin-style fast plucking, and McKahey's angular, dissonant guitar licks elevate them to art-rock status. Lyrically they are interesting as well, tackling themes from the power of money, alcoholism, and even big bottoms with delightfully ascerbic sarcasm.Highlights are Chaos, a jolly sea chanty, Charlton Heston, which is filled with wordplay relating to one of the man's most famous movie roles, and Doctor (A Visit To The), with cool stream of consciousness lyrics.Unfortunately, pressure to change their style to something more commercial caused this fine group to disband after only one full lenght album.Oh well. social review comments | Review PermalinkPosted Friday, September 13, 2013 | Review this album | Report (Review #1034371) 2b1af7f3a8
