The US Air Force Air Vehicle Phenomena Research Program (AVPRP) has a

noted a high-speed air breathing propulsion system being investigated

by "high-Mach-number supersonic air breathing jet engines." The AVPRP

uses expansion of the air, rather than compression, to create an aero-

dynamically stable combustion chamber, and is an "air breathing" type

aero-combustion engine (an aero-combustion engine is one that uses

air as the working fluid). The design is based on known technologies.

One component of the system is the

Supersonic combustion ramjet (SCR). The SCR consists of a ramjet in

which a high-velocity jet of air and fuel mixes with the supersonic flow of

air around the fan, compressing the fuel mixture. Supersonic combustion

ramjets are also called "swirler/scramjets".

drag aerodynamic shape. The

combustion occurs along the supersonic flow behind the fan and

produces a "reverse" thrust. An important characteristic is the high

relative speed with which the air and fuel mix, a Mach number of 10–.

Supersonic combustion ramjets are also called "

swirler/scramjets". The air flow is tailored by a

segmented, rotating vane that expands the flow of air

into the engine's combustion chamber. The fan is located at the apex of the

SCR. It can be

modified to adjust the fan's position for efficient performance.
