For gparted to be able to make a partition on the same drive without destroying data on the existing partition, run it from a Live disk. When you install on the same disk, the partitioning program has enough information to know how to handle the existing partition without destroying data. When installing on a different disk, you must run the partitioning program from the Live disk. You may have to boot from the Live disk and run the program from a Live terminal. If the Live disk is in a different drive than the hard drive you are installing the operating system on, you may have to use the terminal command sudo -i to become superuser.
The good news is that you don't need to format the hard disk. You can just install Linux directly on the hard disk and let GParted auto-partition the disk for you. In order to do so, you need to create a partition for Linux and swap space. Then, after the installation, you have to update the GRUB bootloader, so that it will be able to boot Linux. Finally, you have to run a command in order to find out where Linux was installed, and then mount the new partition. The details are described in this tutorial:
NB. In the case of an installation with no “/boot”, the /boot directory is created by default and you can use that as a boot directory. To create the /boot directory by default, use the below command
With Andy Grammer, Oz our jovial, eccentric and hyphenated-word-loving cool dad. He's kind, smart, creative, sensitive, spiritual, and also the motherfucker who would put a gun to your head if he wasn't in a band. With fellow bandmates Chris and Eli, he's a musical mensch, he's a family man, he's a producer, a songwriter, a dedicated craftsman, a teacher, a writer, a humanitarian, a world traveler, a 'phone call away, an ace bartender, a social media maven, a good friend, an up-beat curmudgeon, a bromance, a gear-head, an educationist, a one-of-a-kind quirky individual, a guy who knows how to scratch the back of his own neck. He is also an ambassador of song. He believes strongly in the power of music and its ability to heal. And he will. Let's play another round of Twister. 827ec27edc
